NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team went a combined 4-2 on day one of the Eck Tennis Classic at the University of Notre Dame Friday.
The Sooners gave up just six games over two doubles matches to win both, while the Lancaster sisters, Mia and Peta Maree, both won in singles action.
"We had a bad start in singles play today and I was a little disappointed in some of our play," OU head coach David Mullins said. "We should be playing some of our best tennis by this stage of the year and that was definitely was not the case today. I am hopeful that we will be a little better tomorrow."
Despite losing the first set, Mia Lancaster defeated Mississippi State's Olesya Tsigvintseva in singles, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Peta Maree Lancaster topped Petra Ferancova of Mississippi State in singles after only giving up a combined six games in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Mia Lancaster teamed with Long in doubles and faced Tsigvinteseva again with partner Roseline Dion. The OU tandem won the match, 8-3.
Long lost just her second singles match as a Sooner to Chrissie McGaffifan of Notre Dame, 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomore transfer Whitney Wofford also lost in singles to MSU's Dion, 6-1, 6-4.
Wofford teamed with Peta Maree Lancaster in doubles, the duo took down Notre Dame's JoHanna Manningham and Julie Sabacinski, 8-3.
The Sooners will face players from Wake Forest on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
