NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma vice president for intercollegiate athletics programs and director of athletics Joe Castiglione and head men's tennis coach John Roddick announced OU's 2012 spring schedule Tuesday.
The Sooners are coming off a 16-8 season in which Roddick's squad advanced to the Big 12 Championship match for the first time in program history.
"We're excited about our upcoming schedule for 2012," head coach John Roddick said. "We have a highly competitive schedule against a number of top teams."
Oklahoma will face 16 opponents that finished last season ranked in the ITA top-75, including 13 that finished in the top-50 and seven in the top-25.
OU opens the spring at home against Wichita State on Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. The Sooners then travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the 2012 ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament, facing Mississippi on Jan. 27 and either Tennessee or Michigan State on Jan. 28.
From there the Sooners return to Norman where they host five straight matches against elite teams from across the country. OU opens the stretch against a pair of Big Ten opponents in Nebraska (Feb. 4) and Indiana (Feb. 12). Oklahoma then hosts two schools from the Pac 12 in Pepperdine (Feb. 26) and Arizona (March 4). Louisville then travels to Norman for a showdown on March 12.
Oklahoma travels outside of Norman to face Virginia, Maryland, Florida State and Texas Christian in non-conference action.
The Big 12 conference is loaded again this season as five out of six Big 12 schools advanced to postseason play in NCAA Championships last year. Baylor finished the year ranked No. 6, while Texas A&M finished tenth nationally. Texas, who OU beat in the regular season, ended the season ranked No. 16 and Texas Tech ended the year at No. 21.
"It is going to be a challenge for our team," Roddick said. "We're going to have to play well every day because our opponents are tough."
OU travels to College Station, Texas, for the 2012 Big 12 Championships, April 27-29. The Sooners finished in a three-way tie for third in the Big 12 conference last season after finishing 3-3.
The Sooners host eight home matches in 2012 and will face WSU (Jan. 24), Nebraska (Feb. 4), Indiana (Feb. 12), Pepperdine (Feb. 26), Arizona (March 4), Louisville (March 12), Baylor (April 13) and Texas Tech (April 15) at home.
