NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma junior Abraham Ancer will begin the first two rounds of play at the prestigious Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic on Monday in El Paso, Texas. The two-day, 54-hole tournament consists of 27 competitors and will be held at the 6,781-yard, par-71 El Paso Country Club.
Ancer, ranked No. 38 by the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings, was selected for the event after being named a PING honorable mention All-America selection in June.
"I feel very lucky for being selected to play in this tournament," said Ancer. "Not many college golfers get to participate in this event, and I feel very honored."
Ancer leads the Sooners this season with a 71.13 scoring average through 15 rounds of play. In OU's five fall tournaments, Ancer posted five top-20 finishes, including three top-10's and a top-five showing.
The Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic is one of the oldest collegiate golf events in the nation and is ranked "the No. 1 tournament in college golf" by the Sagarin/Golfweek Performance Index. Alumni of the Golf Classic have gone on to earn more than $1.4 billion and win 561 events on the PGA Tour.
In all, 144 colleges and universities have participated in the tournament, raising almost $700,000 in scholarship money for the participating institutions.
Each university represented by the Western Refining College All-Americans will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
