NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's golf team, ranked No. 33 by Golfstat.com, turned in a final-round 284 (E) to take third place at the 14-team Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the par-71 Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, Texas.
Oklahoma, which entered the day in fourth place at the fourth-annual event, finished 15 strokes behind winner Texas A&M with a three-round 845 (-7). Nine of the field's 14 teams are ranked in the Golfstat.com top 50.
"The boys did a great job this week and we had a full team effort," said third-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl. "We beat some really good teams this week and played really well from top to bottom."
Riley Pumphrey entered the final round at 4-under par. The senior shot a third-round 72 (+1), including three bogeys and birdies on holes 2 and 16. Although Pumphrey only carded nine birdies in three rounds, he turned in a very clean performance with just six bogeys. His three-round 210 (-3) put him eight strokes behind medalist MJ Daffue of Lamar, in a tie for 11th place.
Abraham Ancer saw a slow start in the first two rounds in Dallas, but showed resilience shooting a team-round-low 68 (-3) in the final round. The junior hit just two bogeys on the day and five birdies (holes 2, 5, 9, 10 and 11). Ancer climbed 15 spots to finish the event in a tie for 13th place with a three-round 211 (-2). The finish was his fifth top-25 finish in the team's five events this fall.
Michael Gellerman turned in a solid finish for the Sooners, recording a final-round 71 (E). The freshman, who has participated in every event for the Sooners this fall, was troubled by bogeys early in the day, shooting four and a lone birdie on No. 6 on the front nine. Gellerman rebounded, yet again, with birdies on holes 13, 14, 17 and 18 and one bogey on the back nine. His three-round 211 (-2) tied him with Ancer at 13th place.
"Abe really had it going today, which was fun to watch," said Hybl. "Gellerman finished off his round nicely."
Eduardo Castiello played well for the Sooners in the No. 3 spot, shooting 2-over par in the final round. The sophomore recorded three birdies and finished with a three-round 216 (+3), good for a share of 30th place at the 77-man event.
Michael Schoolcraft's final round was haunted by a quadruple bogey on his opening hole (No. 1). The sophomore managed to hit just three more bogeys on the day, while birdying on holes 8, 9, 12 and 16. Schoolcraft's final-round 74 (+3) knocked him down nine spots to a tie for 43rd place. Schoolcraft finished the event with a three-round 218 (+5).
"We finished off the fall really strong," said Hybl. "It is time to get back to work this off season."
The event concludes the Sooners' fall schedule. The team will begin its spring campaign Feb. 13 at the two-day UTSA/ Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
