NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team finished the second round of the 15-team Brickyard Collegiate Championship on Saturday in 11th place at the par-72, 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club in Macon, Ga. OU trails leader Georgia Tech by 32 strokes at the fifth annual event that features eight teams ranked in the top 50.
The Sooners recorded the fifth-best score of the day, an 8-over 296, to move up two spots on the leaderboard. At +21, they are just six shots out of the top five with one round remaining. Georgia Tech continues to dominate the field at 11 under par through two rounds, 13 shots in front of second-place North Florida. Florida States' Brooks Koepka (-8) leads the 84-man-field.
Oklahoma senior Riley Pumphrey matched his first round total with a 1-over-73 in the second round and leads the Sooners in 23rd place. Pumphrey shot par or better on nine of his last 10 holes Saturday.
Michael Gellerman rebounded from a 5-over 77 in the first round by shooting par in the second. The freshman birdied the fourth and 12th holes Saturday and moved up 23 spots into a tie for 35th place.
OU's season leader in scoring average, Abraham Ancer shot a second-round 74 (+2). The junior recorded birdies on No. 5 and No. 14, but was haunted by a triple-bogey on the seventh hole. He moved up six spots and is in a tie for 41st place with one round to go.
Sophomore Eduardo Castiello finished the second set of 18 with a 6-over-78 (+6). He dropped 14 spots and is in a tie for 55th place.
Freshman Charlie Saxon fell five spots to 63rd place after shooting a second-round-77 (+5).
“We had a chance to look very respectable today but couldn't close the deal,” said third-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl. “We need to start fast tomorrow and finish the day off with some conviction and belief in what we are doing.”
