NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team finished the first 18 holes of the 15-team Brickyard Collegiate Championship on Friday in 13th place at the par-72, 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club in Macon, Ga. OU trails leader Georgia Tech by 21 strokes at the fifth annual event that features eight teams ranked in the top 50.
The Sooners struggled on the first day of the tournament, shooting a first-round 301 (+3). Georgia Tech shot an 8-under-par opening round and leads by two strokes over second-place Florida State. Georgia Tech's Seth Reeves (-7) leads the 84-man-field.
OU's Riley Pumphrey opened the day with a bogey and recorded a double-bogey on No. 6 before dialing in. He bounced back to register four birdies on the day and finished with a 1-over-73. The senior is in a tie for 25th place.
In his second event of the season, Eduardo Castiello started off solid and was at 1 under par through 12 holes. The sophomore then hit a stretch of four straight bogeys and finished the day at 3-over-par and in a tie for 41st place.
Playing in the No. 1 slot for OU, junior Abraham Ancer shot a first-round 76 (+4). Ancer found himself at 4 over par through 11 holes, but battled back to shoot par or better on five of the final six holes. He is in a tie for 47th place with two rounds to go.
In their third collegiate event, freshmen Charlie Saxon and Michael Gellerman each finished the first round at 5 over par. The freshman duo is in a tie for 58th place.
The Sooners will tee off in Saturday's second round beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT. The final round is scheduled for Sunday. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
