NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's golf team will travel to Macon, Ga., this week to participate in the fifth annual Brickyard Collegiate Championship. The tournament, hosted by Mercer University, will be played Oct. 7-9 at the par-72, 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club.
Junior Abraham Ancer leads the Sooners into the event after recording top-10 finishes in both of OU's tournaments this season. Ranked in the top 100 nationally, Ancer tied for fourth place in the opener and leads the team with a 70.17 scoring average.
OU's lineup will also feature Riley Pumphrey, Charlie Saxon, Eduardo Castiello and Michael Gellerman.
Pumphrey, a senior, will play in the Sooners' No. 2 position. In his season debut at the Mason Rudolph Championship, he shot a 1-under-par 212. Pumphrey finished the event in a tie with Ancer for ninth place.
Saxon will compete for OU at the No. 3 position. The freshman has competed in both events for the Sooners this season and will be looking to notch the first big finish in his collegiate career.
Castiello, a sophomore, has seen action in one event this season. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native had a slow start in his lone event, but managed to turn in even-par performances in the final two rounds.
Gellerman has performed well for the Sooners in the first two events, recording two top-20 finishes. The freshman has the second best average (71.67) among the Sooners who have participated in both events.
Highlighting the 15-team field is two-time defending national champion Augusta State. More strong competition awaits the Sooners in No. 8 Chattanooga, No. 13 Florida State, No. 22 Georgia Tech, No. 33 and defending Brickyard champion Georgia, No. 35 Virginia Tech and No 49 Mississippi. The field also includes Air Force, College of Charleston, Colorado State, Gonzaga, Mercer, North Florida and Texas-Arlington.
"It's great to be back at the Brickyard. I feel like we have had some good preparation for this week back home," said third-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl, who starred at the University of Georgia. "We need to get off to a good, solid start and have everyone contributing."
Teams will play 18 holes Friday through Sunday. Each day's results will be posted to SoonerSports.com. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
