DALLAS, Texas -- The University of Oklahoma men's golf team, ranked No. 33 by Golfstat.com, fired a two-round 561 (-7) at the 14-team Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Monday, good for fourth place at the 7,068-yard, par-71 Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, Texas. OU trails first-place Texas A&M (ranked No. 29) by 10 strokes and is just three shots out of second place with 18 holes remaining.
OU senior Riley Pumphrey was injured and did not participate in the team's win at the David Toms Intercollegiate two weeks ago in Louisiana. That injury seems to be a thing of the past, as the Sooner turned in the team's best two-round performance Monday.
"It was nice to see our guys step up," said third-year head coach Ryan Hybl, "Riley in particular after last week's injury. To come out here and play well is a positive."
Pumphrey started the morning on a good note, recording birdies on holes 7, 11, 17 and 18 against just one bogey. His pace continued into the second round. Pumphrey added three more birdies on the day (holes 1, 14 and 18). His two-round 138 (-4) has him in a tie for fifth place, five shots behind Texas A&M's Jordan Russel heading into Tuesday's final round.
Michael Gellerman looked as though he was in for a long day, recording a bogey on four of his first seven holes in the first round. The freshman showed promising maturity, however, registering birdies on holes No. 2, 3 and 5 to finish the round. Gellerman's recovery carried over into the second round as well, where he shot 3-under par with five more birdies. Gellerman's solid second-round performance moved him up 24 spots to a tie for 10th place at 2 under par.
"Gellerman got off to a shaky start, but persevered and came out this afternoon with a great round for us," said Hybl.
Abraham Ancer also had good day on the course. The junior fininished the first round at par with three birdies and three bogeys. Ancer shot a 1-over-par 72 in the second round to finish the day with a 143 (+1) and is in a tie for 28th place.
Eduardo Castiello turned in a steady two-round performance to start the tournament. Although the sophomore carded just one birdie in the opening round, he only recorded two bogeys. Castiello's second round was more up and down. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native recorded bogeys on No. 1 and No. 11 and a double bogey on No. 15, but added four birdies to finish even for the round. Castiello's two-round 143 (+1) places him in a tie with Ancer for 28th place.
Coming off a 6-under-par opening round at the David Toms, Michael Schoolcraft performed well in the first round. The sophomore recorded five birdies to open the tournament and finished the first round at 2 under par. Schoolcraft had trouble finding his rhythm in the second round, registering three bogeys, one double bogey and one birdie en route to a 75 (+4). His two-round 148 (+2) has him in a tie for 34th place.
"It was a great team effort today, maybe the most complete 36 holes we have played all year," said Hybl. "We need something extraordinary tomorrow, and I believe the boys have the confidence to get it going."
