Red/White Scrimmage Ends in Tie

NORMAN, Okla. -- In its final preseason event of the season, the University of Oklahoma's wrestling squad saw the Red and White squads tie 18-18 at the annual Red/White scrimmage at the McCasland Field House Thursday evening.

"I think it went good," head coach Mark Cody said. "I think the guys showed that they are in good shape, but they were a little tentative and could have been a little more aggressive. It was a good dress rehearsal before we open the season next week. I expect them to go out on the third and let it fly."

The battle for starters began at 125 pounds with a matchup between two-year starter Jarrod Patterson of the red team and a freshman from Kansas City, Mo., Cody Brewer. Patterson struck first with a takedown in the first period. The returning All-American, Patterson, went ahead 3-1 after a quick escape to start the second. In the third, Patterson cruised to a 4-1 win after riding out Brewer for the duration of the period.

In the 133 pound matchup, Jordan Keller (white) defeated Dustin Reed (red) by a 4-1 decision. Keller earned a takedown and in the first and added 2:13 of riding time. Keller, a 2011 NCAA qualifier, earned an escape and his 2:03 of riding time gave him the final win.

Kendric Maple made his return to the mat for the Sooners after redshirting last season. Maple, a Wichita, Kan., native earned the Red team bonus points after downing Scott Chene, 13-2. In the bout, Maple acquired five takedowns, one escape and 3:32 in riding time.

The 149 pound match pitted redshirt sophomore Nick Lester against redshirt freshman Justin DeAngelis. Lester, competing for the white team, had two takedowns in the first and added a reversal a little over a minute into the second period. Lester added another takedown in the third, but gave up an escape and takedown. With the 9-4 decision, Lester brought the White team within one of the red, 7-6.

Two NCAA qualifiers, Chase Nelson and Matt Lester, squared-off in the 157-pound bout. Nelson (white) scored first with a takedown and two-point near fall to lead, 4-0. Nelson earned another takedown, but gave up a takedown and escape of his own. Nelson's 6-3 win gave the White team its first lead of the evening.

Leading 9-7, the White team added to its lead after American transfer Bubby Graham disposed of the Red team's Kyle Detmer, 5-1. Graham had a takedown, reversal and added 3:48 of riding time in rout to his win.

At 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore Nolan McBryde gave the Red team a win by decision after he defeated Marcus Armato, 12-6. McBryde had four takedowns to Armato's one.

Erich Schmidtke handled a light Sean Datte in the 184-pound bout. Schmidtke put the Red team up 15-12 after earning a technical fall in the second period. Before the technical fall Schmidtke had seven takedowns and three near falls.

Keldrick Hall gave the White team a three-point advantage after he pinned freshman Andrew Spangler in 4:20. Prior to the pin, Keldrick held an 11-6 advantage.

The heavyweight battle between the Red team's Elijah Madison and Kyle Colling proved to be the deciding factor of the match. Madison narrowly defeated Colling, 3-1, to tie the event at 18-18.

The Sooners will officially kick off the 2011-12 season Thursday, Nov. 3 when they host Oklahoma City in Norman.
