NORMAN, Okla. --The University of Oklahoma wrestling squad will conclude the preseason this Thursday, Oct. 27, when they partake in its annual Red/White scrimmage on the University of Oklahoma campus at the McCasland Field House in Norman, Okla. at 7 p.m.
The intrasquad ranking matches will pit the top-two wrestlers in each weight class to help determine starters for the upcoming season.
"Our staff is anxious to see how they will compete," said head coach Mark Cody. Many times in wrestle-off situations, athletes tend to be a little less aggressive. Hopefully this won't be the case."
Oklahoma, ranked preseason No. 13 by Amateur Wrestling News, No. 16 by Intermat and tied for 18th in WIN magazine, returns seven starters and six NCAA qualifiers to this year's squad. Also added to the team are five newcomers. Highlighting the returning group is 2011 All-American Jarrod Patterson (125), who collected a 29-9 overall record last season.
Other returning starters that qualified for the NCAA Championships include Jordan Keller (133), Matt Lester (149 pounds), Chase Nelson (157) and Erich Schmidtke (184). Kendric Maple, a 2009-10 NCAA qualifier that redshirted last year, will join the starters at 141 pounds. Keldrick Hall, a two year starter, will returns at 197 pounds.
OU adds another NCAA qualifier in American transfer Bubby Graham. The talented wrestler from Annapolis, Md., looks to anchor the 165 pound spot for the Sooners. Elijah Madison, a national champion at Nebraska-Omaha, will take over the reins of the heavyweight position, while Nolan McBryde and Marcus Armato will battle it out for the 174 pound weight class.
"They have worked very hard and there promises to be some good match-ups," Cody concluded.
The Sooners will officially kick off the 2011-12 season Saturday, Nov. 3 when they host Oklahoma City in Norman.
