Fourteen Named Academic All-Big 12

NORMAN, Okla. – Fourteen members of the University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams were named to the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country Team announced Tuesday afternoon. Eleven Sooners earned first team honors with sophomore Hilary Krein and senior Jeremy Sudbury honored as two of 10 student-athletes with a 4.0 grade point average.

Sudbury, who majors in multidisciplinary studies, was joined on the men's team by George Alex (multidisciplinary studies), Eric Harasyn (multidisciplinary Studies), Frezer Legesse (multidisciplinary studies), Daniel Nicolls (marketing), Ryan Poland (history) and Kevin Schwab (multidisciplinary studies).  

Alex, Harasyn, Nicolls, Poland, Schwab and Sudbury all earned first team honors, while Legesse was named to the second team. It was Schwab's second consecutive selection to the team.

On the women's side, Krein, finance major, was joined by Kelsey Brown (pre-major studies), Natalie Crain (health and exercise science), Jessica Engel (health and exercise science), Molly Ferguson (human resources management), Annie Martin (management) and Kelly Waters (chemical engineering).

Brown, Crain, Engel, Ferguson, Krein all earned first team honors, while Martin and Waters were named to the second team. It was Ferguson's third consecutive selection to the team. Crain and Waters were named to the list for a second straight year.

A total of 72 men's student-athletes were honored, 55 first team selections and 17 second team honorees. For the women, 85 individuals collected honors with 69 first team designations and 16 second team.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.


The Big 12 Cross Country Championships is Saturday and hosted by Texas A&M. The event begins with the men's race at 10 a.m. CT followed by the women's at 11 a.m. CT. The top men's and women's teams are crowned league champion while the top 15 individuals in each race are named all-conference.
