NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma women's basketball kicked off its season Monday with the first practice of the season.

After a week of indoctrination, when the squad exercises in the fundamentals of practicing the Oklahoma way, the Sooners finally took to the court with an eye on preparing for an opponent.

At one of Sherri Coale's practices, everyone gets into the act at all times, whether it's a student manager, a scout team player or even Jasmine Hartman, who is out for the season after tearing her ACL. By communicating, acting as a passer or simply replaying mental repetitions while on the sideline, the two hours inside the Mary Jane Noble Women's Basketball Center is as much a drill in focus as it is physical movements.

Each practice also has an offensive and defensive emphasis and a thought for the day. Monday's offensive emphasis was "attack the rim" while the defensive emphasis was "active stance." And the thought: "champions are not born; they are made day by day."

Oklahoma begins the season Wednesday, Nov. 2, hosting Central Oklahoma in an exhibition game at the Lloyd Noble Center at 7 p.m. Season ticket holders are invited to an open scrimmage Thursday, Oct. 27.
