NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's golf team fired a two-round 569 (-7) at the 11-team David Toms Intercollegiate on Monday, good for first place at the par-72, 7,048-yard Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport, La. OU leads second-place Mississippi by six strokes with 18 holes remaining.
Michael Schoolcraft got things started early for Oklahoma, recording six birdies in the first round (three on each side) en route to a career-best 6-under 66. The sophomore concluded his first 18 holes without a bogey.
Schoolcraft found trouble in the second round as he carded a bogey on three of his first six holes (started on the back nine). He went on to register two more bogeys, but also added three birdies and an eagle on the 537-yard eighth hole to finish the round at even par. Schoolcraft's two-round 138 (-6) has him atop the leaderboard going into Tuesday's final round. He leads second-place Andrew Noto of Louisiana-Lafayette by two strokes.
"Schoolcraft played great this morning," said third-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl, "but more impressive was his afternoon round when he got to 3 over par and finished even."
Abraham Ancer had another solid start, shooting even par in the first round. The junior bogeyed four times in the second round, but also recorded five sub-par scores, including an eagle on the 545-yard 18th hole, to finish at 2 under. Ancer's two-round 144 (-2) put him in sixth place in the 60-player field.
Eduardo Castiello racked up five birdies in the first round en route to a 1-over 73, and followed with a second-round 71 thanks to more consistent play. The sophomore recorded three birdies in the afternoon, but also registered just two bogeys. As a result, Castiello jumped from 20th place to ninth at even par.
Filling in for an injured Riley Pumphrey, Kevin Lee performed well for Oklahoma. Lee recorded four birdies in the opening round and finished at even par before shooting 3 over par in the second round. Lee's two-round 147 (+3) has him in a tie for 20th place.
"Kevin Lee did a nice job today filling in for Pumphrey, considering he had never seen the course," said Hybl.
Michael Gellerman fired a two-round 148 (+4) Monday. The freshman, who managed eight birdies on the day, is in a tie for 26th place.
"It was a great day for us,” said Hybl. “For the first time all year, we finished the day on a good note. We have a long way to go tomorrow, but I like our attitude and expectation level.”
