NORMAN, Okla. - The eighth-ranked Oklahoma wrestling squad (6-1, 0-1) rallied to trounce the Navy Midshipmen, 28-9, at the fourth annual "Beauty and the Beast" event held at the Lloyd Noble Center.
Wrestling alongside the fourth-ranked OU women's gymnastics team in front of 2,351 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center, Oklahoma won its final six matches of the evening.
"We were not feeling real sharp," head coach Jack Spates said. "But the good news is when you look at the final score, even though we weren't feeling sharp, we battled hard and wound up dominating a tough match."
On the women's side, the Sooner gymnasts opened their season with a score of 195.425 to top No. 11 Arkansas (195.075).
The dual began with a heated battle at 157 pounds between OU' No. 6-ranked Chase Nelson and the Midshipmen's eighth-ranked Bryce Saddoris. With the score tied at three Navy's Saddoris chose the bottom position and earned an escape to take the 4-3 lead. Nelson's attempt at a takedown with under a minute remaining was soured after he was penalized a point, giving Saddoris the 5-3 win.
Sophomore Tyler Caldwell got the Sooners on the winning track after he handily defeated Navy's Mason Bailey, 14-2. The major decision victory gave OU a 4-3 advantage heading into the 174-pound bout.
Debuting for the Sooners at 174 pounds was senior Jeff James. Heading into the third period tied, 2-2, Navy's Oscar Huntley secured an escape and takedown to earn the 5-3 victory and gave the Midshipmen a 6-4 lead.
The Sooners fell behind 9-4 after OU's Erich Schmidtke took Navy's Luke Rebertus to three overtimes before eventually falling 3-2.
After the loss at 184 pounds Oklahoma put together a string of six-straight victories to run away with the decisive win.
Keldrick Hall started the onslaught at 197 pounds where he defeated Navy's Greg Prioleau, 8-6.
At heavyweight Nathan Fernandez earned a takedown in the first period and an escape in the third to secure a 3-1 decision over Navy's Dan Miller.
Jarrod Patterson gave the Sooners their third victory by decision after he earned three takedowns, a reversal and two escapes over Navy's Aaron Kalil at 125 pounds to put the Sooners ahead 13-9.
133-pounder Jordan Keller gave the Sooners a decisive 19-9 lead after pinning the Midshipmen's Allen Stein in 6:43.
Despite being under-the-weather, Zack Bailey never trailed Dustin Haislip of Navy and was able to secure a 6-4 victory at 141 pounds.
Matt Lester's debut at 149 pounds proved to be a big move for the Sooners as he earned a fall over Eric Flipowcz with a time of 6:12, ending the dual with a final score of 28-9.
"That's a tough team (Navy) and they wrestled hard," Spates said. "The bottom line is we took it away from them to win going away and that's not easy to do against Navy."
Up next the Sooners will travel to Arlington, Texas, to compete in the Lone Star Duals against No. 22 American, Citadel and Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 15.
