NORMAN, Okla. -- Win the conference and national championships -- This is the repeated adage for OU men's gymnastics under head coach Mark Williams. The 2011 edition of the Sooners is no different as Williams' team sports depth across the board with 11 returning scorers from the 2010 squad, including five All-Americans.
The coaches around the country took notice of the Sooners' returners and off-season success voted OU third in the preseason poll.
In the last 12 years, Williams has guided the Sooners to an incredible 270-25 mark (.915) that includes five NCAA titles and nine MPSF Championships. OU is the only school in the last 12 years to finish in the top four of the NCAA Championships.
With the return of six-time NCAA National Champion Steven Legendre, 2010 pommel horse NCAA National Champion Alex Naddour and All-Americans Jeremy Adams, Jacob Dalton and Bobby Shortle, the Sooners are in line to repeat the championship success.
The 2011 season marks the end of collegiate careers for gymnasts Steven Legendre, Bobby Shortle, Ian Jackson, Anthony Naddour and CJ Grimes, a group that guided Oklahoma to 11 All-America honors last year.
Oklahoma begins the 2011 slate on Jan. 15 with its annual trip to the Rocky Mountain Open hosted by the Air Force Academy. After the Sooners trip to Air Force, the team opens the home season with back-to-back meets against Ohio State on Jan. 22 and Minnesota on Jan. 29.
The Sooners will participate in eight regular season meets, four of which will be in Norman at the Howard McCasland Field House, highlighted by matchups with Ohio State, Cal, Penn State and Illinois.
Following the Winter Cup break from team competition, the OU men will travel to conference rival Nebraska (Feb. 13) and then travel to Palo Alto, Calf. to face the Stanford (Feb. 19). Oklahoma returns home to host California on March 5.
In the month of March, the Sooners will face three members of the Big Ten Conference beginning with a trip to Michigan on March 12. After the matchup with the defending national champion Wolverines, Oklahoma will host Penn State and Illinois (March 19) for a tri-meet.
The 2010 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships will be hosted by the Air Force Academy at the Cadet West Gym on April 2. Last season, the Sooners claimed their 10th conference title in the last 12 years. OU notched its 31st and 32nd individual conference titles under Williams, as Steven Legendre and Ian Jackson won MPSF titles.
The Ohio State University will host the 2011 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships, April 14-16, at the St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Unlike previous years, pommel horse will be a strong event for the Sooners in 2011. Collecting an NCAA Individual Title in 2010 was Alex Naddour . Pommel All-American Jeremy Adams and senior Anothony Naddour also return to give OU an impressive list of competitors on the apparatus.

Oklahoma will rely on veteran gymnasts this year to boost the team average on rings. Junior Patrick Piscitelli and seniors Anthony Naddour, and Ian Jackson will bolster the ring lineup for the Sooners.

With four Sooners in the top five of the 2010 vault rankings returning, it will be hard not to pick OU as the top vault team in the nation. Legendre and Dalton were All-Americans on the event last season, as Oklahoma claimed the top score nine out of the ten season meets.

The Sooners lose All-American Corey English from last year's squad but return Jacob Dalton and Steven Legendre to the parallel bars lineup. Several OU gymnasts have added skills to their routine to bolster the team score on one of the weaker events for the Sooners. Look to Jeremy Adams and Alex Naddour to have break out years on the event.
