Ritchie Wins Singles B Championship

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team went a combined 4-2 in singles on the final day of the Sooner Fall Invitational as freshman Whitney Ritchie claimed the singles B championship.

Ritchie defeated SMU's Shahzoda Hatamova in the singles finals, 6-1, 6-3. Ritchie went 4-0 over the weekend in singles in her first collegiate tennis appearance.

Seniors Tara Eckel and Maria Kalashnikova and RS-sophomore Peta Maree Lancaster also picked up wins in singles for the Sooners. Eckel shut out Andrea Steen-Rosten of UALR, 6-0, 6-0, in singles A action, Kalashnikova defeated Arkansas' Valentina Starkova, 6-2, 6-3, in singles B and Lancaster topped Veronique Luksich of UALR, 6-1, 7-5.

OU's Brittany Parks won the first set against UTA's Giada D'Ortona in singles D, but fell in the tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Mia Lancaster also lost in singles Sunday, falling to Irina Paraschiv of UNT in singles A, 6-2, 6-3.

The Sooners struggled in doubles on day three of the tournament, going a combined 1-2. Kalashnikova and Mia Lancaster earned OU's only doubles win on the day, defeating Rachel Pierce and Yana Kakovkina of UALR, 8-1.

Oklahoma continues its fall tournament season on Oct. 8-10 at the Wildcat Invitational at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
