NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma head wrestling coach Jack Spates announced the 2010-11 wrestling scheduled Thursday.
“We're excited about our schedule, which promises to be one of the most competitive in the nation,” Spates said. “This promises to be an aggressive and exciting team that will challenge for championships. We want to encourage our fans to come out and support our guys.”
The Sooners will kick-off the season by holding the annual Red/White intrasquad scrimmage on Nov. 4 at the Hamilton Field House in Edmond, Okla., before official competition begins Nov. 9, at the McCasland Field House in Norman, against Central Oklahoma.
Oklahoma's 15-match season includes seven home duals versus Navy (Jan. 7), Nebraska (Jan. 28), Missouri (Feb. 5), Wyoming (Feb. 11) and Oklahoma State (Feb. 20) to close out the regular season. In addition, Spates squad will host the Oklahoma Open on Nov. 27.
The dual against Navy will mark the fourth annual Beauty and the Beast event, where Sooner wrestlers compete alongside the women's gymnastics team at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman.
“Our home schedule will be exciting as always with Nebraska, Missouri and of course Oklahoma State coming to town,” said Spates.
The Sooners will once again compete in the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic on Nov. 13, where the Sooners hope to garner their 12th straight title. For the second year OU will compete in the Cliff Keen Invitational (Dec. 3-4) in Las Vegas, Nev. This year OU added the Midlands Tournament in Chicago, Ill., Dec. 29-30.
“The Cliff Keen Invitational was a great addition last year and we are adding to it the legendary Midlands tournament,” said Spates. “Both are like mini nationals and should help prepare us for the end of the year.”
Other road contests include Big 12 matchups at Oklahoma State (Dec. 12) and Iowa State (Jan. 21). The Sooners will also travel to Buffalo (Nov. 12), Arizona State (Nov. 18) and to the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas, on Jan. 15.
Following regular season action, the Sooners travel back to Ames, Iowa, to compete in the 2010 Big 12 Championships. From there the Sooners travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for the NCAA Championships.
