"Oklahoma has established itself as one of the top athletics programs nationally from top to bottom," said Joe Castiglione, OU Vice President and Director of Athletics. "We aspire for even more, but everyone associated with our program should be proud of what we're accomplishing.
"It's also noteworthy that we competed this well in a year when we set a semester grade point average record of 3.01 among our nearly 600 student athletes."
Sixteen of Oklahoma's 21 teams advanced to postseason competition during the 2009-10 school year. Highlights included the women's gymnastics team finishing No. 2 nationally, the men's gymnastics team No. 3 and the wrestling team No. 5. The women's basketball team advanced to its second consecutive Final Four and the baseball team qualified for the College World Series, while the softball team participated in super regional competition.
The men's cross country team finished No. 12 nationally, the men's tennis team made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight, the women's outdoor track and field team took ninth at the NCAA Championships, the men's indoor track and field finished No. 14 and the rowing team moved onto regional competition in just its second year of competition.
