Sooners Roll Past 125,000 on Facebook

July 22, 2010 | Athletics

NORMAN, Okla. -- At 7:48 Thursday evening, a Sooner fan pushed the official OU Athletics Department Facebook page past the 125,000 mark. Oklahoma became the first Big 12 Conference school to gain 125,000 fans on its official page and just the fourth school nationally to pass the mark (Ohio State, Kentucky, Wisconsin).

If OU's Facebook fans were assembled in one spot in Oklahoma, the number would represent the third-largest city in the state behind just Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

Of course, utilizing technology to engage and interact with Sooner fans isn't new at OU. Legendary Sooner coach Bud Wilkinson was the first collegiate football coach to host his own television show in 1953.

OU's demographics reflect a national and international reach for the Sooners. Outside Oklahoma, top cities for OU fans include Dallas, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Denver, Wichita and San Antonio. Beyond the U.S., OU Facebook fans have joined in numbers from Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Japan and Mexico.

In addition to Facebook, OU maintains the No. 1 Twitter feed and No. 1 YouTube channel among Big 12 schools. More than 156,000 Sooner fans receive the Boomerblast in their email inboxes once each week. Subscribers receive a quick preview of the week ahead in Sooner athletics plus exclusive features, ticket offers and special promotions.

Although SoonerSports.com is the main portal for comprehensive coverage of the Sooners, the department's social media platforms serve an important role for fans. Those who join are notified on their personal pages of breaking news, features and promotions direct from Norman.
