NORMAN, Okla. - One night after winning by 68 points in the opening round of the FIBA Americas Men's U18 Championship, Jeff Capel's USA team downed Mexico 114-38 in Sunday second-round action in San Antonio, Texas.

Capel's squad shot 62 percent from the field while holding Mexico to a 21 percent mark at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University.  The red, white and blue posted a 58-19 rebounding advantage and outscored Mexico in the paint 66-8.

Similar to last night's game against the U.S. Virgin Islands when USA jumped to a 35-8 lead after one quarter, Capel's group led 36-6 after the opening stanza Sunday.  A 25-7 second quarter resulted in a 61-13 halftime score, and the U.S. coasted to the win.

"Our guys played hard and we did what we needed to do tonight," said Capel.  "We will have a tremendous test tomorrow versus an Argentina team that is very well coached and has been together for years.  I'm looking forward to seeing where we are."

With Sunday's win, the U.S., now 2-0 in Group B play along with Argentina, qualified for next year's FIBA U19 World Championship.

Argentina, the defending U18 Championship gold medalist, downed the Virgin Islands 82-50 immediately prior to the USA-Mexico game.

In Sunday's Group A action, Canada beat Puerto Rico 100-83 and Brazil topped Uruguay 71-64.  Canada and Brazil are 2-0 while Urugay is 0-2.

USA and Argentina play Monday at 7 p.m. CT in the final round of preliminary play.  The semifinals and final will be played Tuesday and Wednesday.  All games are being streamed live online at www.fibaamericas.com.
