College World Series History

Any Division I baseball program's success is measured in Omaha, Neb., the home of the College World Series. With 10 CWS appearances overall and two national titles, OU is certainly among the nation's most storied programs.

Oklahoma has left its footprint on Rosenblatt Stadium since its very beginning. The Sooners made their first College World Series appearance in 1951, one year after the event's first season at the stadium.

OU went a perfect 7-0 in the 1951 NCAA Tournament en route to the program's first national title, marking the first time in College World Series history a program made it through the double-elimination tournament without a loss.

1951 National Champion Oklahoma Baseball Team

Twenty-one years passed before Oklahoma made it back to Omaha in 1972, but it was then that the Sooners began making it an annual trip.

Under head coach Enos Semore, OU made five straight appearances in the College World Series from 1972-76. During that stretch, the Sooners compiled an overall record of 240-66 (.784) and recorded three top-five finishes (fifth in 1972 and '74 and fourth in 1975).

Oklahoma returned to the College World Series in 1992 before back-to-back appearances in 1994 and '95.

The Sooners claimed the program's second national title on June 11, 1994. With "25 guys pulling on the same rope," the team's motto for the season, OU capped a remarkable tournament run with a 13-5 route of Georgia Tech in the championship game.

NORMAN, Okla. -- Fans following the College World Series this weekend are going to hear a lot about the final year in Rosenblatt Stadium.

Since opening in 1950, the stadium has served as the ultimate destination for college baseball, and it has won the hearts of everyone who has walked through its doors, from players to coaches and fans alike.

When the College World Series moves to downtown Omaha next year, it will take with it the 60 years of memories made inside these walls.

Oklahoma has been a part of that history almost since its beginning. Starting with the program's first national championship in 1951, OU has made 10 appearances in the College World Series and is one of only 13 programs nationally to win multiple NCAA titles in baseball.

With this year being the last chance for the Sooners to leave an imprint on the Rosenblatt Stadium turf, we offer a look back at OU's history in the College World Series.

10 CWS Appearances All-Time

1951 - Sooners Win First National Title
Head Coach: Jack Baer | CWS Record: 4-0
Overall: 19-9 | Batting Avg: .232 | ERA: 3.94

In the program's first-ever appearance in the College World Series, head coach Jack Baer guided OU to the 1951 NCAA Championship. The Sooners went a perfect 7-0 during the postseason run, claiming the title with a 3-2 win over Tennessee on June 17 in Omaha, Neb.

Jack Shirley became OU's first All-American after recording the win on the mound in the title game. Shirley was a second-team ABCA selection and finished the year with a 5-1 record and a 1.97 ERA.

1972 - Sooners Return to Omaha

Twenty-one years after the program's first College World Series appearance, head coach Enos Semore brought the Sooners back.

Oklahoma claimed the program's second district title by sweeping Tulsa and won their first game of the CWS, a 2-1 victory over Temple in 13 innings, before dropping back-to-back games against Arizona State and Texas.

The 1972 season marked a fifth-place finish for Oklahoma.

OU Makes Five Straight Trips to Omaha
This was just the start of what Semore would help Oklahoma accomplish, as the Sooners would return to Omaha each of the next four seasons.

1992 - Oklahoma Back in the National Spotlight
Head Coach: Larry Cochell | CWS Record: 1-2 | Overall: 43-24 | Batting Avg: .307 | ERA: 4.99

The Sooners tied for a Big Eight title and went on to win the NCAA Mideast Regional to earn their first trip to the College World Series since 1976. Oklahoma won one and lost two, but second-year head coach Larry Cochell used the 1992 season as a building block for bigger things to come.

1994 - Oklahoma Claims Second National Title

Oklahoma claimed its second national title on June 11, 1994. Led by solid hitting in the championship game against Georgia Tech, the Sooners broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with five runs en route to their fourth straight win in the tournament. OU finished the CWS as the top hitting (.327) and pitching (2.37 ERA) team, while ranking second in defense with just five errors.

Senior centerfielder Chip Glass was named the Most Outstanding Player of the series and Ryan Minor, Rick Gutierrez, Davin Traylor and Mark Redman were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

1995 - Sooners Make Ninth CWS Appearance

Oklahoma made its ninth appearance at the College World Series and recorded its first back-to-back trips since the 1975-76 seasons.

2010 - OU in College World Series for 10th Time

OU downed No. 1 Virginia in the NCAA Super Regional to advance to the 10th College World Series in program history. The Sooners begin their quest for a third national title this weekend in Omaha.
