Compliance Corner: May 2010

Now that the school year has ended many student-athletes desire to find a job to earn extra money over the summer months. The Athletics Compliance Department would like to take this opportunity to remind the friends of Sooner Athletics about the NCAA's parameters regarding student-athlete employment.
It is critical that both employers and student-athletes understand all applicable University of Oklahoma and NCAA rules regarding the employment of a student-athlete. Below are five (5) bullet points that all student-athlete employers must be aware of and fully understand:
• The student-athlete may only be compensated for work he/she actually performs;
• The student-athlete must be compensated at a rate commensurate with the locality's standard rate for the type of work performed;
• The student-athlete's compensation cannot include any remuneration for the additional value a student-athlete provides (e.g. the student-athlete's publicity, reputation, fame or personal following);
• The student-athlete may not receive any extra benefits unless those benefits are available to similarly situated employees (transportation to job site, employee discounts, meals, etc.); and,
• All University of Oklahoma policies and procedures related to student-athlete employment are adhered to.

Any violation of NCAA or University of Oklahoma rules could affect the student-athlete's eligibility, the reputation of the University of Oklahoma, and the reputation of the place of employment.
