OU Athletics Academic Advisement First Certified

May 13, 2010 | Athletics

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma's Academic Advisement has become the first to be certified. The National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) made the announcement today.

"The fact that we were the first to be certified is a great source of pride for our department and the university," said Dr. Gerald Gurney, OU's Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academics.

"It should also be meaningful to our current students and to those who are considering Oklahoma among their college choices."

N4A's certification review was designed to comprehensively examine academic support services and identify if academic support standards, developed by N4A, are being met. The peer review was executed by Carrie Leger, Director of Academic Support Program for Student Athletes at North Carolina State University.

"The University of Oklahoma has a long history of comprehensive programming for its student-athletes," Leger said. "I was not surprised by what I saw there, but still very impressed."

Gurney is president-elect for N4A. His predecessor, Christine Jackson of Louisville, said the certification highlights the important role of academic advisement.

"The acknowledgment of trained and qualified academic advising programs and personnel only strengthens the significance and impact of those in academic advising," she said.

"Our certification program has generated a lot of interest and we've scheduled several more visits this year, with schools interested in demonstrating that their programs not just meet but exceed standards."

In its commitment to ensuring academic success, N4A will be offering in the fall of 2011, individual certification for academic support professionals. Its purpose is to recognize those who have a demonstrated understanding of current NCAA legislation, unique student-athlete needs and the overall challenges of intercollegiate athletics.
