OKLAHOMA CITY -- The University of Oklahoma rowing team competed in the second annual Big 12 Championship Saturday, on the Oklahoma River. Racing in front of a crowd of more than 500 people, the Sooners took second place with 97 points behind Texas with 108 points.
The first varsity eight raced neck-and-neck with Texas the entire race. The Sooners stayed within five seats of the Longhorns after the 1,000 meter mark. Heading towards the finish line OU continued to gain ground in the photo finish race, but came up short 6:41.12-to-6:41.86.
“The varsity eight is heart broken,” said Head Coach Leeanne Crain. “It's tough to lose by such a close margin, but we just needed to shift a few strokes earlier. We closed in on Texas but it was too late and we simply ran out of water.”
OU's second varsity eight placed third in a tough battle with Texas, Kansas and Kansas State. The Sooners finished in third with a time of 7:02.7 in front of Kansas State (7:04.97). Texas came in first (6:54.61) and Kansas placed second (6:55.4).
The Sooners varsity four finished third in a close race with Kansas and Texas. At the 1,000 meter mark Oklahoma was one seat behind Kansas and five seats behind Texas. OU continued to gain ground, but fell short at the finish line with a time of 7:47.11. Texas was first (7:41.01), Kansas placed second (7:44.87) and Kansas State finished in fourth (7:51.09).
Oklahoma's first novice eight battled with Texas the entire race through continuous rain. In one of the closest races of the day, the Sooners placed second behind Texas 7:00.7 to 7:04.4. OU edged out Kansas (7:08.17) and Kansas State (7:19.15).
The second novice eight also faced rainy conditions on the race course . The Sooners placed second with a time of 7:30.7 behind Texas (7:25.59) and ahead of Kansas (7:34.8).
“I'm incredibly proud of this team,” said Crain. “We came up short in a couple of races, but these student-athletes threw every bit of themselves into the competition. “
“Congratulations to Texas for an incredible day of racing.”
