OU dropped to 26-10 overall and 6-7 in Big 12 play and Texas Tech improved to 20-19 and 8-7.
"I really think this was one of the most important Big 12 games we have played in a long time," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "It moved the winner into the sole possession of third and its going to take the loser and jumble them in the middle of the pack in the four, five, six and seven spots. Unfortunately for us, we didn't take advantage of the situation."
Texas Tech benefitted from a Sooner error and two possible double play balls to plate five runs in the first inning off Jeremy Erben (6-1). The senior captain was making his second start of the year but only lasted 3 1/3 innings after giving up seven runs off 10 hits and a walk.
"We bobbled two double play balls, we don't come up and get a drag bunt with one out, and if we make any one of those three plays, they don't score," said Golloway. "But unfortunately, we don't make the plays and they score five."
Cody Reine's RBI single in the fifth ended Texas Tech starter Jay Johnson's afternoon. The base knock was the sixth allowed by Johnson, who lasted 4 1/13 innings with five walks and three strikeouts.
While Ellison scored the run that broke up the shutout, the Sooners stranded another base runner after Tyler Ogle grounded into a double play against reliever Colt Farrar (1-1). While Farrar was credited with the win after just 2/3 of an inning, Chad Bettis recorded his sixth save with four innings of relief.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ellison doubled off a Bettis offering with two outs to the wall in right field and plated two runs. The extra-base hit cut the score down to 7-3.
Ellison (seven games) was one of four Sooners to extend their hitting streak. Garrett Buechele and Caleb Bushyhead have hit safely in the last eight games and Tyler Ogle upped his streak to nine games.
The Sooners' offense put at least one runner on second base in six of the nine innings but finished Sunday 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
"We got beat better baseball team today," said Golloway. "We've got to go back (home) and get better. We are not a very good baseball team right now. We were a good team early in the season and have struggled as of late. If we want to salvage this and have any kind of season worth noting, we have a lot of work to do."
Oklahoma hosts No. 10 TCU on Tuesday, April 20 at 7 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The game is the second and final meeting of 2010 between OU and TCU. The Sooners won game one, 4-2, on April 6 in Fort Worth.
Following the midweek game, OU will travel to College Station and face a Texas A&M team that was swept by Texas over the weekend. The Aggies sit one game behind the Sooners in the Big 12 standings.
