INDIANAPOLIS -- 2010 Winter Cup Challenge champion and University of Oklahoma volunteer assistant coach
Chris Brooks of will join former OU teammate Jonathan Horton as the two represent the U.S. at the 2010 Tyson American Cup on March 6 at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.
The Tyson American Cup, one of the most prestigious international invitational's, features some of the world's top gymnasts in an all-around format.
Two-time Tyson American Cup champion Jonathan Horton of Houston (who is the 2008 Olympic horizontal bar silver medalist and the 2009 U.S. all-around champion) and
Chris Brooks of Houston face strong competition from gymnasts from 11 different countries.
OU assistant coach Rustam Sharipov will also be representing the U.S. at the American Cup as a personal coach for Brooks.
"I think it is a great opportunity for Chris to be at the American Cup," said Sharipov. "It is one of the most prestigious competitions in the world. It is really a nice experience."
In their last U. S. Senior National Team event, Brooks claimed the all-around title at the Winter Cup and recorded a two-day total of 175.800. Horton, right behind Brooks in second place, finished the weekend with a two-day total of 174.750. The Horton improved scores on three out of six events to finish the second night with an improved 88.250 all-around score.
Brooks replaces 2009 World all-around seventh-place finisher Tim McNeill of Falls Church, Va., who withdrew due to insufficient recovery time to achieve competitive readiness.
"Hopefully we will get out there and I will win or place in the top three," said Brooks. "I am just going to try to hit my routines and do my job and let the scores fall where they may."
