STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The second-ranked OU men's gymnastics team completed the regular season with a win over eighth-ranked Penn State at the Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University. OU finishes the regular season with an 11-1 mark with eight victories against top-10 opponents.
OU moves into the post-season play hosting the MPSF Conference Championship in Norman at McCasland Field House, April 3.
“We are glad to host the MPSF conference championship in Norman and hope to see a great turn out from the fans,” said Williams. “It will be a great atmosphere for the guys and the conference.”
The Sooners posted a score of 359.250 to finish on top of the Nittany Lions (354.450). OU finished undefeated against Big Ten opponents in the regular season.
“I was pleased with the overall team score and the effort of the team,” said OU head coach Mark Williams. “We did a good job of improving throughout the year and ended the regular season on a high note. This is a good win going into the post-season.”
OU finished with top scores on four out of the six team event, claiming event titles on floor (61.250), pommel horse (58.450), vault (64.500) and parallel bars (58.500).
Freshman Alex Naddour led Oklahoma with his first all-around title of the season with a score of 87.600.
The Sooners have claimed every all-around title this season with Legendre (3), Dalton (3), Alex Naddour and Ian Jackson (1) all winning titles.
“Alex did a great job on pommel,” added Williams. “All of the guys did well and I think we are right where we need to be to compete for a conference and national title.”
The meet was highlighted with freshman Alex Naddour shattering his own record on pommel horse with a score of 15.700. This is the third time that Naddour has broken the program record on the apparatus with the previous high score of 15.400.
Senior Corey English also claimed an event title on parallel bars (14.850).
The 2010 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships will be hosted by Oklahoma at the Howard McCasland Field House in Norman on April 3. In 2009, the Sooners finished second and claimed one team event title (vault), while junior Steven Legendre finished first on vault.
OU will be seeking its 10th conference title out of the last 12 years. The Sooners won the last conference title last held in Norman in 2005.
