NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma Sooners were assigned the No. 3 seed in the Kansas City Region, announced during the NCAA Selection Special Monday night.

OU will host 14th-seeded South Dakota State Sunday, March 21, at approximately 8:30 p.m. at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla. The Sooners and Jackrabbits will follow a matchup between No. 6 seed Georgia Tech and No. 11 Arkansas-Little Rock that tips off at 6:16 p.m. Central.

It is Oklahoma's 11th consecutive NCAA Championship selection.

Nebraska earned the No. 1 seed for the Kansas City Region that will be played at the Sprint Center beginning March 28. Notre Dame was the second seeded team and Kentucky was No. 4.

"You have to earn the right to get there," OU head coach Sherri Coale said about the possibility of playing in Kansas City, "but I just think that's huge. Its an opportunity for our fans to follow us.

"I love the fact that we're staying in the Midwest. I like that if we play well enough to win two at the Lloyd Noble Center, we can go on to Kansas City. Very proud of a No. 3 seed. It's hard to come by, so I'm really proud that we earned that. I look forward to the opportunity to competing."

The Sooners have a history with the top-seeded teams in their road to the Final Four.

Oklahoma could meet Georgia Tech in the second round for a second straight season after defeating the Yellow Jackets in Iowa City, Iowa, to advance to the Oklahoma City Regional last year.

Nebraska defeated Oklahoma, 80-64, in Norman on March 24. Notre Dame defeated OU, 81-71, in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Nov. 28, 2009, in the game following sophomore Whitney Hand's season-ending ACL injury.

"Having played Notre Dame the day after Whitney's injury, we feel like we're a lot steadier now and know a lot more about ourselves than we did at that point. We look forward to earning the right for another matchup there," Coale said.

"I think the same thing about Nebraska. We feel like if we just made a few shots in that one, the outcome could have been different in Norman."

As for playing their opening round game at home, the Sooners' players are ecstatic.

"I think it's a huge advantage," senior captain Amanda Thompson said. "Our fans have been great this whole year. I'm just excited to play in front of them again and bring a replay of that senior night, hopefully."

"We're excited," junior Danielle Robinson said, "you know, about another opportunity to play basketball is always great. Especially here in Norman."

Practices for the NCAA first and second rounds will begin at noon Saturday, March 20, and are open to the public.
