Rowing Ends Invitational on High Note

Oklahoma City, Okla.-- The University of Oklahoma rowing team finished the OU Invitational in second place in the total points competition. The weekend culminated in 14 first place finishes and two undefeated boats.

In the morning session the Sooners faced Big 12 opponent Kansas. The first novice eight and the first varsity eight remained perfect through three races. The novice eight won with a time of seven minutes, 27.86 seconds to 7:47.64, and the varsity eight ran away with first, finishing with a time of 7:11 to Kansas' 7:30.6.
The first varsity four posted a time of 8:17.63 to finish second behind Kansas "A" (8:12.7) and ahead of Kansas "B" (8:48.2). Oklahoma's second novice eight also placed second to Kansas with a time of 8:11.03. OU's second varsity eight returned to the water after a loss to Tulsa and a win against to SMU Saturday, the eight defeated Kansas 7:29.68 to 7:32.58.
The first novice eight started the afternoon for the Sooners with a win, completing the invitational with a perfect 4-0 record. With a time of 7:15.44, Oklahoma defeated the Tulsa lightweight team (7:23.71). The novice eight were led by coxswain Carly Schueler, Elizabeth Blanche, Abbey LaFollette, Ashley LaFollette, Kelsey O'Grady, Lena Eagle Road, Morgan Whinery, Sara Sherrer and Heather House.
The first varsity four raced Creighton and won 8:19.96 to 9:11.26. OU's varsity four went 2-2 on the weekend beating Tulsa and Creighton.
Oklahoma's first varsity eight posted the fourth fastest time of the weekend when it defeated Creighton 7:01.51 to 7:34.95. The varsity eight stayed undefeated at 4-0. Coxswain Kelsey Witten, Meghan Farrell, Rebecca Staff, Chelsea Moore, Meagan Harrell, Nicole Furmanek, Sarah Kelle, Rebecca Winchester, Melea McCreary and added to the boat for the final race, Nicole Bladow.
The Sooner second varsity eight capped of the weekend with a 3-1 record. OU crossed the finish line at 7:35.65 to knock off Kansas (8:02.93).
The last race of the day for Oklahoma was the second novice eight. Looking for its first win, the second novice eight defeated Creighton 8:05.33 to 8:09.76.
Oklahoma heads to Austin, Texas for the Longhorn Invitational on Lady Bird Lake, March 19-21. Oklahoma competes against conference rivals Texas and Kansas State.
