NORMAN, Okla. --
The University of Oklahoma's Athletics Student Life Center has earned the rare distinction of International Tutor Program Certification from the College Reading and Learning Association.

The designation means that tutors working within the department's writing center are uniquely qualified, especially when compared with peer institutions.

"I would say it's unusual for an athletics department to take this step, but it's an admirable step," said Tammy Pratt, OU's Director of the Assessment and Learning Center. "It demonstrates a commitment that the campus embraces and it should be impressive to students who are considering OU."

Dr. Gerald Gurney, who supervises the Student Life Center and spearheaded the application for certification, said the foundational principles represented in the certification will improve the educational experience for Sooner student-athletes.

"Reading and writing skills are essential for optimal learning for students at all levels," he said. "Improvement of these skills maximizes efficiency for our student-athletes and helps them balance their academic and athletic responsibilities."

It also keeps the academic assistance unit in lock step with the championship expectations that exist throughout the athletics department.

"Our department's mission is rooted in academic performance," Gurney said.

"Obtaining CRLA certification means that OU's academic support programs are meeting a nationally recognized standard for delivery of educational services in support of student-athletes. The CRLA is the same professional certification that is met on our campus, and we strive to offer a consistency of excellence for services available for the student-athletes as in the student body."

Maintaining a high standard is essential in an OU classroom that is becoming increasingly more competitive, a fact that made the record cumulative fall grade point average of 3.01 for the 500 student-athletes even more impressive.

"OU student-athletes have reached this milestone against the backdrop of the best academic student body in the history of the University," Gurney said.

"I am so privileged to be able to work in support of such fine young representatives of the University who prove that they are successful on the field as well as in the classroom."
