While Gibson provided the pitching, another newcomer, junior second baseman Danny Black, led the way at the plate with four RBIs and Caleb Bushyhead and Garrett Buechele contributed three hits apiece.
The Sooners built a 8-0 lead after their at-bat in the top of seventh, but the Aztecs rallied with five runs in the bottom half of the frame off freshmen relievers Jack Mayfield and Brandon Bargas.
"We knew they would make a run at us," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "They are a really good team, and the first game is not going to be indicative of what kind of team they are going to be this year."
San Diego State's rally forced the Sooners to give the ball to Ryan Duke, who entered in the eighth inning with the tying run in the on deck circle. Duke struck out two and allowed one hit and a walk in his two innings of work for his second save in as many nights. With two saves already this season, Duke has 18 in his career and moved into sole possession of second place on OU's all-time saves list.
"We probably wont have him for tomorrow now but that's okay," added Golloway. "He's done his work this weekend and we have to make sure we protect him."
In games one and two, OU rallied for victory but finally staked an early lead in the third game of the series. But just like game one of Saturday's doubleheader, which OU won 17-5, the Sooners used the sixth inning to build a large advantage.
OU plated four runs in the sixth inning on Saturday night with four base knocks, all extra base hits, led by Tyler Ogle's two-run double to right center field. Danny Black contributed a RBI triple, his only base hit of the game despite having a game-high four RBIs.
Black's sacrifice bunt in the second inning put the Sooners on top 1-0. OU plated a run in the third and another in the fourth with RBI groundouts from Ross Hubbard and Black.
While the Sooners' offense tacked on single runs in three straight innings, Gibson retired the side with three strikeouts in the first and also retired seven straight from the end of the second frame through end of the fourth, five via strikeout.
"I thought Ryan Gibson, making his debut as a freshman, had a terrific start for us," added Golloway. "His pitch count was up after five innings and he had to come out."
Gibson's stellar performance helped SDSU keep San Diego State scoreless for 10 1/3 innings dating back to the sixth inning of game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Sooners trailed 5-1 heading into the sixth inning, but then exploded for 24 runs over the next 10 1/3 frames into Saturday night's contest.
After the Aztecs tacked on five runs in the bottom of the seventh, senior catcher Bryan Groth extended the lead back to five runs. Groth's home run, the second of his career, was the Sooners' fifth of the season.
The last time OU started a season on the road and won its first three games was in 1989. During that campaign, which ended 44-19, the Sooners recorded wins against New Orleans, Tulane and LSU.
