LAS VEGAS - The 13th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team faced its toughest test of the weekend on Saturday afternoon against 12th-ranked California. The Sooners (7-1) continued their hot-hitting, pounding out 10 hits in a 12-1 five-inning rout of the Bears (6-3). OU led early and packed on the runs in a six-run fifth inning to secure the abbreviated win.
THE DIFFERENCE
Oklahoma scored a total of 20 runs in two games on the day. After scoring eight against Boise State earlier in the morning, OU continued the trend, scoring 12 against the Bears. Against Cal, 11 of the Sooners' 12 runs were awarded RBIs and all but two of the 12 were unearned. Oklahoma's 3-4-5 hitters (Flores, Shults, Vandever) went 5-for-9 with eight RBI.
SCORING SUMMARY
The Sooners scored two runs in the top of the second. Sophomore Katie Norris reached on a fielding error and base runner Dani Dobbs scored on sophomore Karolyne Long's double to right center. Oklahoma added three more runs in the fourth. Junior Haley Nix doubled to right center and Chana'e Jones reached on a fielder's choice to put two runners aboard for Flores' 45th career home run and third this season. After giving up a home run in the bottom half of the fourth, the Sooners exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth. Norris reached on a single and Long homered to left field to bring across two runs. Nix, Flores and freshman Jessica Shults all walked to load the bases for senior Lindsey Vandever's first grand slam of the season.
