THE SOONERS IN THE STATE OF NEVADA
Oklahoma is 14-4 all-time in the Silver State. OU first played in Nevada in 1982. This trip is OU's first appearance in the state since 2008.
SHULTS GETS FRESHMAN SEASON OFF TO A BANG
Freshman Jessica Shults (Valencia, Calif.) has gotten her rookie season off to a great start. Shults hit a grand slam in her first collegiate at-bat and of her four hits this season, three are home runs. Shults leads OU in runs scored (4), RBI (8), total bases (13) and slugging percentage (1.083).
NIX LEADING OFF IN THE RIGHT WAY
Junior college transfer Haley Nix (Daingerfield, Texas) leads off the Oklahoma lineup and has done her job of getting on base. Nix is tied for the team lead with five hits but leads the team in walks with six. Nix is hitting .625 with an on-base percentage of .786.
JONES OFF TO A GREAT START
Of players who have at least one at-bat in all four games played this season, junior Chana'e Jones (San Jose, Calif.) is tied for the team lead with five hits. Jones has five RBI on the year with a .875 slugging percentage. Jones manages to reach base 60 percent of the time and already has two doubles on the year.
GASCOIGNE GETTING TIME IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman pitcher Michelle Gascoigne (Benicia, Calif.) made her first career start as a Sooner on Feb. 17 against St. Gregory's. Gascoigne picked up the win and also saw 4.2 innings of relief against No. 16 Tennessee on Feb. 14. In 8.0 innings pitched, Gascoigne has produced a 0.88 earned run average, giving up just one earned run and four hits. She has registered 12 strikeouts and issued just two walks.
RICKETTS A TALL TASK TO HANDLE
At six feet, two inches, freshman Keilani Ricketts (San Jose, Calif.) is a threat in the circle and at the plate. Ricketts started all three games at Dot Richardson's National Collegiate Softball Invitational and went 2-1 at the event. Against Chattanooga, Ricketts was brilliant recording 12 strikeouts and delivering the sacrifice fly that scored the game's only run.
FLORES CLOSING IN ON HOME RUN RECORD
Senior Amber Flores (Calexico, Calif.) blasted the 42nd home run of her career Wednesday evening. Flores needs just six long balls to tie Samantha Ricketts atop the Oklahoma career list in the category.
OU IN FIRST-TIME MEETINGS
Oklahoma is 74-12 all-time in first-time meetings. The Sooners are 43-5 when a first-time contest is played at a neutral site.
SOONERS AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
Oklahoma is 152-138 (.524) all-time against ranked opponents. The Sooners are 2-2 all-time against a ranked Northwestern team and 3-3 against Cal when the Bears are ranked. The Sooners are 4-4 against the 21st-ranked team and 7-1 against the nation's 12th-ranked team.
GASSO TO FACE ALMA MATER
Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso is a 1984 graduate of Long Beach State, where she played shortstop. Gasso is 6-0 all-time versus her alma mater.
OKLAHOMA, ARIZONA RANKED IN EVERY NFCA POLL
The Sooners have been ranked in the NFCA poll since its inception, which spans 211 weeks. Oklahoma and Arizona are the only programs who have been ranked every week the poll has been released.
FLORES SELECTED IN NPF DRAFT
Senior Amber Flores (Calexico, Calif.) was selected by the USSSA Pride in the 2010 National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft on Feb 10. Flores was taken fifth overall with the first pick in the second round.
FLORES COLLEGIATE POY FINALIST
Senior Amber Flores (Calexico, Calif.) was named top 50 finalists for USA Softball's Collegiate Player of the Year, the Amateur Softball Association announced Jan. 27. The 2010 watch list is comprised of 50 players representing 35 schools and 14 different NCAA Division I Conferences. The ASA will announce the 25 finalists on April 7.
VANDEVER NAMED TEAM CAPTAIN
Senior catcher Lindsey Vandever (Davenport, Okla.) has been named team captain for the 2010 softball season. The team selected the captain based on characteristics such as work ethic, positive attitude and consistency both on and off the field.
OU TABBED PRESEASON FAVORITE
The University of Oklahoma softball team received seven of 10 first-place votes and tallied 79 points to receive top billing in the 2010 Big 12 coaches' preseason poll, as announced on Jan. 15. The selection marks the second straight season in which Oklahoma has been chosen as the preseason favorite.
OKLAHOMA ADDS FOUR FOR 2011
University of Oklahoma head softball coach Patty Gasso has announced the signing of four student-athletes to NCAA National Letters of Intent. Those student-athletes are Javen Henson (Red Oak, Okla./Red Oak HS), Destinee Martinez (Corona, Calif./Roosevelt HS), Haley McGregor (Wichita, Kan./The Independent School) and Brittany Williams (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon HS). The group will begin competing for the Sooners during the 2010-11 academic year.
