EVANSTON, ILL. – Despite resting reigning All-American Zack Bailey and Cliff Keen Champion Nathan Fernandez, the eighth-ranked Sooners finished sixth against a talented field at the Midlands Championships.
Leading the way for Oklahoma was sophomore Chase Nelson who won the 157 pound title. Nelson had been wrestling at 165 but dropped weight classes over the break and won five-straight to claim the championship.
Fellow sophomore Tyler Caldwell, who dropped to 165, earned a third-place finish after going 7-1 over the two day tournament.
Jarrod Patterson, who finished second at the Cliff Keen Invitational, secured fifth over a talented field of 125 pounders at the Midlands Championships.
Jordan Keller (133 pounds) and Nick Lester (149) each finished seventh overall.

Oklahoma's 82 points fell just short of Pittsburgh who finished in fifth with 82.5 points. Big 12 foe Missouri claimed the tournament title with 103.5 points, with Wisconsin and Lehigh rounding out the top three.
Spates' squad returns back to Norman on Friday, Jan. 7 for the annual “Beauty and the Beast” event, which pits the Sooners' wrestling team against Navy. The wrestlers will compete alongside the No. 4-ranked Oklahoma women's gymnastics team, who is set to take on the 11th-ranked Arkansas, inside the Lloyd Noble Center at 7 p.m.
