NORMAN, Okla. --Oklahoma junior third baseman Garrett Buechele was named to the Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America second team on Wednesday.
It marks the first such selection for Buechele, who was tabbed a second team All-American following the Sooners' postseason run that ended after three games in the College World Series. Buechele led OU in every offensive category en route to the program's 10th CWS appearance and first since 1995.
The Arlington, Texas, native hit .359 last season with 17 homers, 65 RBIs and a .630 slugging percentage en route to being selected in the 18th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers.
He is the second Sooner to be named to a preseason list under head coach Sunny Golloway's watch (Ryan Duke in 2010). Prior to Golloway's first full season at the helm in 2006, the last Sooner to hold that distinction was David Purcey in 2003. Purcey was later selected in the first round of the 2004 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.
Buechele is one of four Sooners selected by his teammates to captain the 2011 squad. He was also a team captain in 2010, a year after being named the 2009 Big 12 Freshman of the Year. He is joined by junior Tyler Ogle and seniors Elliott Blair and Michael Rocha in 2011.
A former walk-on, Buechele redshirted his first year at Oklahoma in 2008. Since then, he is hitting .356 with 21 homers and 105 RBIs in 128 starts.
