NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma vice president for intercollegiate athletics programs and director of athletics Joe Castiglione and head men's tennis coach John Roddick announced OU's 2011 spring schedule Tuesday.
The Sooners are coming off a 19-8 season in which Roddick's squad advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament, a program first.
“We're excited about our upcoming schedule in 2011,” head coach John Roddick said. “We feel it's a really competitive schedule with a lot of top teams."
Oklahoma will face 15 opponents that finished last season ranked in the ITA top-75, including 13 that finished in the top-50 and five in the top-15.
OU opens the spring at home against Wichita State on Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. Roddick's squad then travels to Champaign, Ill., to compete in the 2011 ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament, facing Notre Dame on Jan. 28 and the winner of the Illinois vs. Boise State match on Jan. 29.
The Sooners face a tough non-conference schedule as they host one of the nation's best teams in Virginia on March 18.
“We're excited to have one of the top teams in the country, if not the top team, in Virginia come in as our biggest non-conference match,” Roddick said. “I think it is important with the direction of the program and where we are going, to have a schedule that includes a lot of top teams.”
Oklahoma will also face Louisville, Indiana, Arizona, TCU, Tulsa, San Diego State and Northwestern in non-conference action.
The Big 12 conference is loaded again this season as four Big 12 schools advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championships last year. Texas, who OU beat in the Round of 16 at the NCAA tournament, ended the season ranked No. 4 and Baylor finished at No. 7. Texas A&M and Texas Tech each finished in the top-15.
“It is going to be a challenge for our team moving forward to be able to get through this schedule and play well,” Roddick said. “We're going to have to play well everyday because there are not a lot of easy matches on our schedule, but we're excited for the season.”
OU travels to College Station, Texas for the 2011 Big 12 Championships, April 29-May 1. The Sooners finished fifth in the Big 12 conference in 2010.
The Sooners host eight home matches in 2011, OU will face WSU (Jan. 18), Northwestern (March 4), Virginia (March 18), TCU (March 20), Texas (March 25), Texas A&M (March 27), Tulsa (March 29) and Rice (April 10) at home.
