CHANDLER, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma baseball team made its annual trip to the Willow Spring Boys' Ranch in Chandler, Okla., on Nov. 2.

The Sooners have been coming to the ranch since 2005 and have created a tradition of naming the team's captains for the upcoming season at the event. Seniors Elliot Blair and Michael Rocha and juniors Garrett Buechele and Tyler Ogle were voted as the 2011 captains by their teammates.

Buechele was also voted a team captain a year ago.

“We traditionally name three captains but with the voting so close this year, it was the staff's decision to name a fourth,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “I believe our team has done an outstanding job in voting for four players that clearly represent the leadership quality within our team setting.

“Today is a big part of our journey as we move forward continuing our path towards Omaha.”

The captains are four of the 20 letterwinners and 10 starters (8 position players, two pitchers) returning from the 2010 College World Series team that finished 50-18 overall.

In addition to selecting the team captains, the Sooners' day was filled with interaction with the kids and various duties around the grounds that included weed eating, mulching, painting, mowing, hauling trash and clearing out trees.

The coaches and players ate dinner with the kids and the ranch's staff at Jacob's Ladder in the evening. Willow Springs Boys' Ranch is a long-term residential childcare facility that accepts applications from boys between the ages 7 to 12 years old. Boys are able to live on the ranch until they graduate from high school, obtain their G.E.D. or participate in an independent living program after graduation.

It is the program's goal to provide an environment where boys can become successful and develop into productive adults.

“You hear the phrase 'athletes giving back to the community' all the time, but we believe it is more student-athletes developing character as they help others within the community,” added Golloway.
