NORMAN, Okla. – Ionut Beleleu is set to compete in the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place Nov. 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y. Columbia University will serve as the tournament host.
Before taking to the courts Beleleu, along with 24 other participants, will appear on the CBS Early Show on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Throughout the broadcast a few players and coaches will be selected for live interviews.
The CBS Early Show is a two-hour program that begins at 7 a.m. and lasts until 9 a.m.
“It is really exciting for Johnny (Ionut Beleleu),” head coach John Roddick said. “It's an exciting thing to go on a show of that magnitude and it's great for college tennis that they are showcasing the event.”
Beleleu, ranked No. 33 nationally, earned a spot in the prestigious tournament after winning the USTA/ITA Central Region Singles Championships in Norman on Oct. 25. The Romanian native will face the nation's best in New York.
“Johnny has a great opportunity to solidify himself as one of the better players in the country,” Roddick said. “He has had a good fall and has steadily done better each tournament. It is going to be a tough field, but if you play well there you have a chance to go far.”
The singles draws consist of 32 players. Winners of the ITA Regional Championships and eight finalists from the ITA All-American Championships received automatic entry. Host school Columbia is given one wildcard entry and seven at-large entries, based on rankings, complete the tournament field.
