ST. CHARLSE, Mo. -- Oklahoma wrestling newcomers performed well in the 2010 Lindenwood Open, hosted by Lindenwood University. Justin DeAngelis won the 149 pound championship, while two other Sooners finished in the top three at their respective weight classes.
DeAngelis, a freshman from Tulsa, Okla., was crowned the 149 pound champion after winning four-straight matches by decision. In route to the championship, DeAngelis defeated the No. 6 seed Daniel Bell from LU and the No. 2 seed Seth Horner (UN).
Fellow freshman Chase Gordon (Oviedo, Fla.) and Ian fisher (Perry, Okla.) each claimed third place finishes at their weight classes.
Gordon, the third seed at 149 pounds, advanced to the semifinals before falling to Guy Kirby of UN. In the wrestleback bracket, Gordon defeated the No. 1 seed Ryan Jahn by a 3-2 decision. In the third place final, Gordon downed LU's Bell by a 3-1 decision.
Fisher, 141 pounds, advanced to the third place final after winning three-straight matches. In the final Fisher downed MMI's Brandon Westerman by a 10-9 decision.
Two other Sooners, Kyle Colling (Arcade, N.Y.) and Parker Madl (Stillwell, Kan.), claimed fourth place finishes at the Open. Colling, heavyweight, went 5-2 in tournament action. Madl, 165 pounds, also finished the open with a 5-2 record.
The final Sooner participant to place was Dustin Reed (Choctaw, Okla.). Reed, 133 pounds, finished in fifth place after going 6-1.
Other Sooners competing in the open were fellow freshman Nolan McBryde (4-2), Josh Durham (3-2), Derek Geiges (2-2) and Quincy Mondaine (2-2).
All Oklahoma participants in the Lindenwood Open will likely redshirt this season.
