Paval Drops Contest in Semifinals Saturday

NORMAN, Okla. - The USTA/ITA Central Region Championships concluded play Sunday at the Gregg Wadley Pavilion and Heading Family Tennis Center with two Sooners advancing to the singles main draw finals and OU doubles tandem John Warden falling in the finals.

Senior Ionut Beleleu and sophomore Costin Paval will face one another in the singles main draw finals Monday, Oct. 25 at 9:30 a.m. Beleleu advanced to the finals after defeating fellow Sooner Peerakit Siributwong in the quarterfinals. The Zalua, Romania, native then defeated Tulsa's Ashley Watling, No. 39 nationally, in the semifinals.

Paval, the 2010 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, advanced after defeating a pair of Hurricanes. Paval beat Tulsa's 34th-ranked Marcelo Arevalo, 7-5, 7-5, in the quarterfinals and followed that performance with a convincing win over TU's Tristan Jackson in the semifinals.

In doubles, Warden and Formentera were seeking their second fall tournament title Sunday as the duo faced Oklahoma State's Rifat Biktyakov and Aleksey Bessonov in the main draw finals, after defeating Nebraska's Aumueller and Lindheim in the semifinals. It was a heated doubles match that was ultimately decided in a tiebreaker set. However, the Cowboy duo took the match, 9-8(2).

Following Monday's main draw finals the Sooners will compete in the Texas Invitational's, Nov. 5-7, in Austin, Texas.

OU Head Coach John Roddick on hosting the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships
"We're excited to host the biggest individual tournament in our region," OU head coach John Roddick said. "It's a great opportunity to showcase our facilities. We are excited about hosting it. We want to start hosting more events and utilizing our facilities for events like this."   

Central Region Brings Top Talent
The event will feature some of the best players in the collegiate ranks, including nine ranked players in the ITA preseason singles poll and three ranked doubles tandems. The list of ranked singles players include: No. 33 Ionut Beleleu (OU), No. 34 Marcelo Arevalo (Tulsa), No. 39 Ashley Watling (Tulsa), No. 41 Chris Nott (Arkansas), No. 48 Sebastian Gallego (Minnesota), No. 49 Calin Paar (Nebraska), No. 55 Costin Paval (OU), No. 61 Christopher Aumueller (Nebraska) and No. 71 Tobias Wernet (Minnesota).

Ranked doubles teams include: OU's Paval and Beleleu (No. 18), Minnesota's Gallego and Phil Arndt (No. 28) and Arkansas' Nott and Matt Hogan (No. 37).
