NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams open their 2009 season this weekend at the Hurricane Festival, Saturday, Sept. 5, at Mohawk Park in Tulsa.
The event, hosted by the University of Tulsa, starts with the men's four-mile race at 8:00 a.m., followed by the women's two-mile race at 8:35 a.m. Big 12 rivals Texas and Oklahoma State along with Oral Roberts, Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma Wesleyan and host Tulsa are scheduled to participate.
The women will be led by junior Jessica Engel, who received All-Big 12 honors in 2008. Senior Lauren Watson, who finished fourth in this event in 2008, and junior Lindsay Pierson, who crossed the finish line in eighth, will look to improve on their top-ten finishes from last year's meet.
Sophomore Natalie Crain returns to open her 2009 season, while Saturday's meet will mark the Oklahoma debut for Ellen Dobbin, Erin Hargens and Molly Ferguson.
On the men's side, seniors Scott Cooper, Chris Sweeney and Tony Clement look to anchor the squad traveling to Tulsa, while junior Kels Moreland and redshirt-freshman Ross Larimer round out the men's team for Saturday's meet. Sweeney and Cooper are the only two runners from the group to compete in 2008 with Sweeney recording the program's highest finish at the 2008 meet.
