NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's basketball team has announced its 14-game 2009-10 non-conference schedule, which will feature seven home contests, three games in the Great Alaska Shootout and three road games against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams.
The Sooners, who went 30-6 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight last season, will play at least six teams that advanced to postseason play a year ago and possibly a seventh if it meets Washington State in the Great Alaska Shootout.
Featured games include back-to-back home outings against Arizona (in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series) and Arkansas, and road contests against a trio of teams in VCU, Utah and Gonzaga that combined to go 76-26 last season.
The Sooners will play three games in the Great Alaska Shootout Nov. 25-28, including contests against San Diego (16-16 last year) and Houston (21-12) in the first two rounds. They will face Washington State (17-16), Nicholls State (20-11) or Alaska Anchorage (15-14) in the third round.
UTEP (23-14) will be OU's opponent in the All-College Classic Dec. 21 in Oklahoma City.
Arizona, Gonzaga, Utah and VCU all participated in the NCAA Tournament last year, with Arizona and Gonzaga advancing to the Sweet 16. UTEP reached to the College Basketball Invitational finals before losing to Oregon State. Houston also competed in the CBI, while Washington State reached the postseason NIT.
"This is a competitive non-conference schedule that will challenge our young team," said OU head coach Jeff Capel. "Several of these teams had great seasons last year and return big-time players. Guys like Matt Bouldin of Gonzaga, Larry Sanders of VCU and Nic Wise of Arizona -- all three of them are on the Wooden preseason top-50 list. This schedule will really help prepare us for play in the Big 12, which I think will be the strongest conference in the country."
Also on the home schedule are Mount St. Mary's (19-14) in the Nov. 14 season opener, Lousiana-Monroe (10-20), Centenary (8-23), Northern Colorado (14-18) and Maryland Eastern Shore (7-23).
The Sooners will play a single exhibition game Nov. 3 at home against the University of British Columbia. OU beat UBC during its Labor Day exhibition tour of the Vancouver area in 2007.
