August 24, 2009 | Athletics
NORMAN, Okla. -- With students back on campus and classes resuming this week, another year is officially upon us.
To help get you prepared for what promises to be another exciting season in OU Athletics, we bring you our annual fall sports preview.
Soccer kicked things off at home over the weekend and is already off to a 2-0 start. Volleyball begins its 2009 campaign in Houston this week, while cross country and football open their seasons on Sept. 5.
We look forward to seeing you all out there supporting the Sooners throughout the year. Boomer Sooner!

Coach Nelson's first year is in the books, and while it didn't go quite as planned in terms of wins and losses, a solid foundation was set.
With a successful spring in which they compiled a perfect 6-0 record, the Sooners showed just how much progress they've made. OU returns10 letterwinners from a year ago who started at least 10 games, including leading-goal scorer Whitney Palmer.
Joining the returners is a talented recruiting class highlighted by Dria Hampton (MF) and Kelsey Devonshire (GK), who both participated in the U.S. Soccer Region III U-19 camp over the summer.
Another year of experience for the returners and a talented recruiting class provides a balance in attributes and will help create more depth across the field for the Sooners in 2009.

The goal is the same, but the desire for the Oklahoma volleyball team to get back to the NCAA Tournament is stronger than ever.
For a team that fell two wins shy of consideration in 2008, closing the door on an emotional season means opening a new one to a very promising 2009.
A young team in 2008, the Sooners have a renewed, fresh mindset heading into this season. Oklahoma returns all six position starters and four different team statistical leaders from 2008. Of the 10 returning, just two are seniors.
With all that talent and experience, the Sooners have all the tools necessary to pick up where they left off last season and finish the journey this year.

Rare are the days when a team retains the services of a Heisman Trophy winner, three All-Americans and four All-Big 12 players.
With a good chunk of its Big 12 Championship and BCS title game team still intact, the stage is set then for Oklahoma, the only program to win back-to-back Big 12 crowns, to shoot for its fourth in a row while also battling for its fifth BCS Championship game appearance in Coach Stoops' 11 seasons.
The highly anticipated season opener is less than two weeks away, with OU set to face BYU at the new Cowboys Stadium on Sept. 5.

The Sooner women, led by junior Kelly Waters, will look to improve on a 10th place finish at the 2009 Big 12 Championships.
Waters became the fifth athlete in the last six years of the women's program to qualify for the NCAA National Championships after finishing fifth at Big 12s.
The men will debut several young and promising athletes after redshirting all scholarship runners in 2008.
