Three Sooners Earn CGA Honors

NORMAN, Okla. – Three members of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team were selected on Monday as 2009 College Gymnastics Association All-America Scholar-Athletes.

Jacob Messina and Russell Czeschin were both selected to the CGA first team. Messina, an environmental science major, earned the honor with a 4.0 grade point average. Czeschin collected his fourth straight first team CGA award after posting a cumulative GPA of 3.78 in health and exercise science.

Garnering his first CGA award was junior Steven Legendre (mechanical engineering) as a second team member, qualifying in the 3.20-3.29 section.

In addition to his work in the classroom, Legendre proved to be one of the top gymnasts in the country in 2009 by capturing three individual National Championships. The sophomore won the all-around title and two individual titles on floor and vault moving past Bart Conner (three titles) into second in the OU record books. Legendre's three individual titles was the highest amount won by a gymnast in 2009.

As a team, Oklahoma ranked in the top 10 in the nation with a GPA of 3.070.

Legendre (FX, V, AA), Czeschin (FX, V) and Messina (PH) also secured All-America honors at the 2009 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships, as Oklahoma brought home 11 All-America titles bringing the program total to 196.

The CGA honored 75 individual gymnasts as 2009 first team All-America Scholar-Athletes for attaining at least a 3.50 grade point average and 55 second team members for attaining a grade point average between 3.2 and 3.499.
