Legendre Places Third at Japan Cup

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma junior Steven Legendre and the U.S. Senior National Team finished sixth with a score of 258.550 in the team all-around competition at the 2009 Japan Cup, July 18, in the Makuhari Event Hall in Chiba, Japan.

Japan won the team competition with an all-around total of 275.500. China finished second with 273.850, and Germany came in third with 266.800.

The team all-around was decided for the first time by the "5-3-3" format, the system that will be applied at the 2012 London Olympics. The team score consisted of three gymnasts competing on each of the five apparatus' with all three scores counting.

The event concluded Sunday, July 19, with an individual all-around featuring a 12-gymnast field with two gymnasts representing each country.

Legendre placed third on floor exercise with a score of 15.4 and finished 10th with an all-around score of 84.350.

The Japanese took first and third in the all-around, with Kohei Uchimura finishing first with a score of 92.750 and Kazuhito Tanaka taking third with 90.850. Fabian Hambuechen, of Germany, placed second with a score of 92.100.

The meet was Legendre's second international performance of his career after earning a bronze medal on vault at the Toyota Cup in 2008.

The next event for Legendre and former Sooners Chris Brooks and Jonathan Horton will be the 2009 Visa Championships in Dallas, Texas, on Aug. 12-15, at the American Airlines Center.
