OKLAHOMA CITY – University of Oklahoma golfer Liam Logan and OU men's golf assistant coach Phillip Bryan secured spots into the 2009 U.S. Amateur Public Links field on Monday, both qualifying at Lincoln Park West Course in Oklahoma City.
Logan, who completed his sophomore campaign with a 74.21 stroke average during the 2008-09 season, fired rounds of 65 and 67 on Monday en route to a two-stroke victory over Jason Wood (-8). The Fort Worth, Texas, native was bogey-free during the 36-hole qualifying tournament, mixing 26 pars with 10 birdies for a spot in the Public Links field on his home course, which will commence July 13th at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.
Joining Logan and Wood as one of the three qualifiers for the Public Links was Bryan, who survived a three-man playoff for the final spot at 6-under-par. Bryan's 36-hole tally was equaled by Logan Herbst and OU signee Nathan Chambers (Purcell, Okla.) – who joins the Sooners this fall.
Bryan carded a birdie on the first playoff hole at the par-3 10th for the final guaranteed spot, while Chambers will be the first alternate after a birdie at the par-4 18th to defeat Herbst.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links runs July 13-19 and is free to the public. The competition is open to any bona fide public-course player whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 4.4. The event is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
