NORMAN, Okla. -- The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced Sooner Kyle Terry to its annual Division I All-Academic team for the 208-09 season Thursday afternoon. Additionally, the Sooner squad placed a Big 12 best-15th on the All-Academic Team.
This past season, Terry posted a 30-3 overall record competing at 149 pounds for Oklahoma. The junior tallied a 5-0 record against Big 12 foes during the regular season and capped off his successful campaign with a first place finish at the Big 12 Championships.
Over the course of the season, the Midwest City, Okla., product racked up 28 straight victories spanning from Nov. 8 to March 20. Majoring in Health and Exercise Science, Terry qualified for his second career NCAA Championship and fell one win short of All-American status.
To be considered for the award a wrestler must have accumulated a 3.2 cumulative GPA or higher, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule. Also, one can be honored for the All-Academic team with a 3.0 GPA and achieved All-American status this past season.
Boasting a collective 3.0435 GPA, the Sooner team led all Big 12 schools by placing 15th on the 2009 All-Academic Team. American University (3.2839) led all teams for the second straight season.
The 2008-09 individual team comprised of 51 NCAA qualifiers, 17 NCAA All-Americans, eight NCAA finalists and five NCAA champions. In total, 73 student-athletes representing 45 schools were honored.
For teams to be eligible for consideration, the team GPA is comprised of 12 student-athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that competed in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier.
