NORMAN, Okla. -- Senior J.T. Wise was named a second team All-American by Baseball America on Friday. The 2009 Big 12 Player of the Year was also tabbed a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball last week and was named OU's first, first team All-American on Wednesday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) since 2000.
Wise is also a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation's top catcher. The final votes will be tallied at the College World Series and the winner announced at a banquet in Wichita, Kan., on June 26.
A first team All-Big 12 selection, Wise was recently named a first team All-Region pick by the coaches' association. He is eligible to receive first team All-America honors from that organization.
Drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 MLB Draft on Wednesday by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Wise led the Sooners with a .359 batting average and 17 homers. He was tied for the team lead in RBIs and recorded a .996 fielding percentage behind the plate while throwing out 30 potential base stealers.
Wise owns four All-America honors after collecting three thus far in 2009. He started his collegiate career at Louisiana State and was named a freshman All-American at second base. Following his sophomore season at LSU, he transferred to OU and hit .278 with seven homers and 49 RBIs as a junior in 2008.
