NORMAN, Okla. -- Senior J.T. Wise and junior Jamie Johnson were named to the ABCA Midwest All-Region first team on Thursday. Sophomore Ryan Duke was tabbed a second team honoree.
The teams were voted on by the coaches from the 36 schools in the region and the first-team selections will be considered for ABCA All-America honors when the committee meets later this week in Omaha, Neb.
The first team honors for Wise and Johnson are the first earned by a Sooner since Eddie Cornejo in 2003. OU has six honorees in the last three years under head coach Sunny Golloway.
The selections come after the Sooners' enjoyed a 43-20 record this season and a No. 7 national seed in the NCAA Tournament. OU was the only Big 12 school to have two representatives on the first team.
Wise was named a first team All-American on Wednesday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA) and is a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation's top catcher. The 2009 Big 12 Player of the Year was also named a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.
Wise, drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 MLB Draft on Wednesday by the Los Angeles Dodgers, led the Sooners with a .359 batting average and 17 homers. He was tied for the team lead in RBIs and recorded a .996 fielding percentage behind the plate while throwing out 30 potential base stealers.
Johnson was a first team All-Big 12 selection in 2009 and was picked in the seventh round of this year's MLB draft by the Detroit Tigers. Johnson hit .353 with 13 home runs, 44 RBIs and 18 stolen bases in his second season as a Sooner.
Johnson enjoyed a solid postseason run and was named to the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament team and Norman Regional All-Tournament team. In seven postseason games, Johnson hit .444 with three homers and five RBIs. The junior finished the 2009 season hitting safely in 23 of the last 25 games with 11 multiple-hit performances.
Duke led the Big 12 with 16 saves and ranked sixth in the nation and was named a third team NCBWA All-American. The save total is the second highest in school history behind Jeff Bajenaru's 20 recorded in 2000. In addition, the 16 saves ranks third all-time in a career at Oklahoma.
Duke was successful in 16 of 18 save attempts and one of his blown saves was turned into a victory at Washington State. He was named an All-Big 12 second team selection as 10 of his conversions came in conference play. Overall, Duke led OU with 26 appearances and struck out 43 batters and limited them to a .212 average in 36 1/3 innings.
