NORMAN, Okla.--University of Oklahoma sophomore Ana-Maria Constantinescu was named Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Year, announced Wednesday by the conference.
In addition to the league's top award, Constantinescu earned a spot on the All-Big 12 team for the second year in a row.
"It feels great to be recognized after a long season," Constantinescu said. "It is always nice to know that the hard work during the season pays off in the end."
Constantinescu completed the 2009 season ranked No. 96 nationally with a 19-2 overall record and 12-0 conference record at the No. 1 singles spot. The sophomore earned the Big 12 regular season position championship at the No. 1 spot after going undefeated in conference play. Constantinescu also became the first women's tennis player in Big 12 history to win every set in conference play.
Constantinescu is only the second player in OU women's tennis history to earn Big 12 Player of the Year. Current OU volunteer assistant coach Anda Perianu also earned the award in 2004.
Constantinescu also became only the fifth OU player to be named to the All-Big 12 team in back-to-back seasons.
